<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These skills are generally coordinated by a &#8220;product manager&#8221; around whom a flexible &#8220;product team&#8221; revolves, bringing in the necessary expertise according to the various stages of the product lifecycle.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of course, each specialist within the product team must be properly trained in their own particular area of expertise. However, there is another training challenge that is critical to the product&#8217;s success or failure: enabling these different specialists to work effectively together and aligning them around the shared objective of &#8220;making the product succeed in its market.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This alignment does not come naturally, as each specialist, in perfectly good faith, holds a truth — yet only a partial truth — about what it takes to make a product succeed. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most common example, amongst others, is that the technical specialist often believes success depends on the product&#8217;s innovative character and technical performance, whereas the marketing specialist considers it to rest on customer acceptability in terms of value, pricing, and time to market.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Aligning Expertise Around a Common Objective</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So how does one design a training programme that not only aligns sometimes very different perspectives, but also harnesses the new possibilities offered by AI?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Drawing on what I have had the good fortune to practise over a number of years with technology companies, here are the key principles around which a training programme designed with this objective in mind should be organised, whether or not it is enhanced with AI:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>The programme must be aimed not only at product managers, even though their perspective remains central, but at all members of the product team.</li>



<li>It must present the fundamental principles of strategy and marketing as they apply in a technical environment, so as to align teams around a shared vision of what makes a technical &#8220;product&#8221; succeed or fail.</li>



<li>It must explain the organisation and governance of product policy within the company, illustrated by contributions from the various managers involved, including those from purely technical backgrounds. Each participant must gain a clear understanding of the objectives and constraints of the different members of the product team, as well as those of management. Contrary to what one might expect, the details of this product organisation and governance can sometimes be poorly understood, even within a large group.</li>



<li>It must set out the internal product policy processes: for instance, decision-making rules, the expected content of a plan or business plan for a product, or the definition, required inputs, and expected outputs of each internal stage gate authorising progression to the next step and its funding.</li>



<li>In order to put the programme&#8217;s content into concrete practice, it is advisable for the programme to include the development and presentation by each participant, to the rest of the group, of a personal action plan. This action plan will set out an analysis of the situation of a particular product and the participant&#8217;s personal contribution to the collective success of that product, in the form of a list of actions to be carried out over a period of several months.</li>
</ol>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Pedagogical methods and benefits for participants</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Such a programme can be designed as a series of thematic modules of two to three hours each, delivered either in person or remotely, with an opening session and a closing session held in person, the whole being followed by an assessment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If necessary, it can be adapted to address specific sub-groups, such as those responsible for launching a new product or those responsible for managing an existing one.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As regards the new possibilities offered by Artificial Intelligence, these can be deployed in two distinct directions:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Naturally, improving interactivity and personalisation during online or in-person sessions: there is currently an abundance of articles on this subject.</li>



<li>But also, and this strikes me as a promising avenue that we are currently exploring, supporting training sessions and the facilitator&#8217;s responses with an AI-powered system capable of providing direct answers to specific practical questions. The system uses an AI fed by a proprietary internal knowledge base and is trained to deliver relevant responses drawing from heterogeneous sources (Word documents, PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, videos, and so on).</li>



<li>It is worth noting that such a direct question-and-answer system can also prove extremely valuable in facilitating access to the various resources made available to the product team on the company&#8217;s intranet or intranets. These resources do indeed tend, over time, to become fragmented, sometimes overlooked, or accessible only through a &#8220;labyrinthine&#8221; process that is invariably time-consuming.</li>

The value proposition must revolve around a clear triad: CO₂ performance, European origin and supply resilience.<br>Portfolios should be presented in terms of local jobs, climate performance and guaranteed delivery timelines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion – Are you competitive, or are you eligible?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the years ahead, green public procurement will not reward the cheapest products, but the portfolios most closely aligned with European industrial objectives.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The question is intentionally blunt: if a European local-content requirement suddenly became mandatory in your segment, how much of your B2G revenue would disappear overnight?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In many B2B factories, “digital transformation” has long been more of a boardroom buzzword than a true operational lever. Yet the situation is changing fast: shrinking margins, skills shortages, customer pressure on lead times and quality, and growing risks of supply chain disruption. The industrial players performing best are those that have structured their transformation around a unified data backbone, predictive AI, and process automation, enabling them to manage production, quality, and the supply chain almost in real time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The new foundation: a unified industrial data platform (and the legacy challenge)</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In many factories, data is fragmented: ERP on one side, MES on another, local Excel files, quality systems, maintenance, SCADA, and so on. The first building block is to create a unified data foundation: an industrial data lake or data warehouse fed by the ERP, MES, IoT sensors, the WMS, and the CMMS.</p>

In a mechanical components factory, we saw a project stall because IT wanted to standardize everything. It was only by accepting to connect 20-year-old machines via dedicated IoT gateways, while keeping the legacy ERP, that the full “order → production → shipment” flow finally became visible in real time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This foundation makes it possible to correlate process data (machine parameters, environmental conditions) with quality non-conformities and breakdowns. For a marketing or product decision-maker, this is not just an IT topic: it determines the ability to demonstrate gains (OEE, scrap rates, lead times) and to package the offering as a data-driven solution for customers.</p>

<li>Equip the message for different stakeholders: plant management (performance), IT (security), finance (ROI).</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The key question going forward</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If your offering disappeared tomorrow, what would concretely stop working in your customer’s factory? Which industrial indicators would no longer be monitored, and what would be the immediate financial impact? If the answer is unclear, your offering is not yet the “digital backbone” it should be.</p>

									<p>Last week, the liquidation of the historic home-appliance company Brandt, with the dramatic loss of 700 jobs, hit like a bombshell.</p>
<p>That same week, a young video game company based in Montpellier, Sandfall Interactive, founded in October 2020, swept nearly all the possible awards in Los Angeles at the 2025 Game Awards after selling 5 million units of its latest game in six months, in a growing sector that employs more than 12,000 people in France.</p>
<p>Many other examples could be set side by side, but the simultaneity of these two pieces of news, as well as their contrast, once again raises the same persistent question: in which sectors, and above all how, can we secure the future of the economy, industry, and jobs in France?</p>

<p>Of course, there are future-oriented sectors and others that are no longer so; of course, there are sometimes insurmountable handicaps linked to energy costs or labor costs, just as there are markets for large contracts that operate as much on geopolitical criteria as on strictly economic ones, and so on.</p>
<p>But very often, the question that arises in the face of competition is that of value versus costs and price, or more precisely that of the value differential versus the price differential.</p>
<p>This will obviously not be possible everywhere, but the sectors that will continue to create jobs will be those in which companies manage to sustainably create products or services that sell profitably. The engine of employment is the product that succeeds, and the engine of a successful product is most often the relationship between the value offered and the price asked.</p>
<p>I have been fortunate for several years to support high-technology companies that create many jobs because many of their products succeed in France, in Europe, or around the world.</p>
<p>I will not comment in detail on what underpins customer value and its link to the price asked in consumer sectors such as home appliances, banking, or luxury, which are not my areas of expertise. Mine is the world of professional technological products (or B2B/B2G), where this exercise of understanding value is just as important and difficult, but of a different nature.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">On this specific issue of value versus price, I have drawn two lessons from my professional experience</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Firstly</h3>

<p>The value of a product or a service for a customer follows an unavoidable rule, valid in most business sectors, from which not all the consequences are always drawn when one says “we need to create value.”</p>
<p>A customer does not buy value itself, but differences in perceived value, provided that these are seen as greater than the difference in price asked. Price, for its part, is a separate decision as to whether or not to directly pass on costs.</p>
<p>Competitiveness is therefore not only a matter of cost; it is a matter of the cost/value relationship.</p>
<p>This rule, which incidentally explains the success of most so-called “premium” companies and brands, has four consequences:</p>

<li>Creating customer value is not enough; it is necessary to create more of it than competing products or solutions</li>
<li>At the same time, the proposed value differential must be considered greater than the price differential asked</li>
</ol>
<p>Competitiveness is therefore not only a matter of cost; it is a matter of the cost/value relationship.</p>

<p>These basic principles are not so different in the professional technology world compared to the consumer world, but their implementation is often more complex and requires the use of different methods.</p>
<p>B2B/B2G companies offer “products” whose development is often long and costly, and whose lifespan on the market can be very long through successive evolutions or versions. These “products” may be materials, components, services, software, machines, systems, or complete solutions. They are sold on public or private markets in sectors or industries such as electronics, construction, chemistry, IT, robotics, nuclear, rail, naval, or Aerospace/Space/Defense.</p>
<p>B2B/B2G companies that succeed with their “products,” even if these are sometimes sold as part of “customer projects”:</p>

<li>Analyze in a very detailed way the hierarchy of what “creates value” for these customers, a difficult exercise since this value varies by market or customer and is not solely a matter of technical performance: it can also relate to services, consistency in quality, customer relationships, payment models, or image</li>
<li>Carry out a very detailed comparison, both technical and non-technical, of their “product” against competing products or solutions</li>
<li>Carefully arbitrate, during the creation of the “product,” between several options in order to select the differentiation they want to create on a few essential points</li>
<li>Strive to measure with equal care the cost and the “willingness to pay” for this differentiation</li>
<li>Master technology watch, the possible integration of innovative technologies, as well as technical development in terms of development methods, financing, cost, and timelines</li>
<li>Support their “products” throughout their entire life cycle, from design to development, from commercial launch to end of life, through continuous efforts to adapt and improve cost/value competitiveness</li>
<li>Put in place an effective mechanism to, as the case may be, sell the “products” or “identify and capture projects,” which here relies on more rational than emotional foundations, even if the latter are not entirely absent</li>
<li>Support this sales mechanism with operational marketing specifically adapted to raise awareness of and promote their “products”</li>
</ol>
</li>

<p>These are some of the keys to success for B2B/B2G technological products.</p>
<p>France has the talent to train some of the best engineers in the world, and this is a tremendous asset for anticipating the technological future in B2B/B2G.</p>
<p>However, technologies alone, no matter how innovative they may be, are not enough; they must be integrated in order to turn them into products and services that succeed in their markets because the additional value they provide is consistently aligned with their price.</p>
